The Strategic Roads User Survey (SRUS) is the formal measure of user satisfaction for those driving on England’s motorways and major ‘A’ roads; the roads managed by National Highways on behalf of the Government.
It asks about a wide range of factors that make up drivers’ journey experiences, including satisfaction with road surface, journey time, roadworks management, and how safe they felt. SRUS also asks an overall journey satisfaction question. The survey provides National Highways with a detailed picture of user opinion down to individual roads to help it make improvements where needed.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, Transport Focus carried out over 8000 face-to-face interviews with users each year, on a continuous basis. Covid-safe face-to-face interviewing is not likely to be practical in future, so Transport Focus has developed an alternative methodology where we invite road users to complete the survey online. SRUS surveying restarted in April 2021 after a 12 month Covid-enforced break.
You can analyse SRUS results yourself using Transport Focus’s data hub.
